Sale of Vilamoura for new revival

11 May

US global private equity firm Lone Star, has acquired Garvecat, the company responsible for developing the Vilamoura resort, with the intention of reviving and promoting the destination in the heart of the Algarve.

US global private equity firm Lone Star, has acquired Garvecat, the company responsible for developing the Vilamoura resort, with the intention of reviving and promoting the destination in the heart of the Algarve.

Vilamoura Algarve - Car rentalVilamoura is a resort town which includes the emblematic marina and golf courses, and because of its status as a resort, it is run by a management company responsible for the destination as a whole.

Since 2004 Lusort, part of the Garvecat group which has now been sold to Lone Star, have been running Vilamoura, and the sale will now mean that it will pass over to new management with potential changes to all those living in and running businesses there.

The resort covers over 2,000 hectares and includes the 825 berth marina but it is perhaps the more than 700 million square metres of buildable land that have attracted Lone Star to the area, as this offers the construction potential for more than 5,000 properties within close proximity to both the five anchor marina and the beach.

Lone Star has plans to “strengthen and revive” the resort through the implementation of a long-term investment plan.
Juan Pepa, director of Lone Star for Spain and Portugal, said that: “Vilamoura is a unique opportunity for international investors who want to capitalise on the ongoing recovery of Portugal and its real estate sector.”
Lone Star has a history of spotting potential successes that many will be hoping can be replicated in Vilamoura.

What DVLA driving licence paperless change can mean for car hirers abroad this summer

11 May

Holidaymakers are being warned to expect a summer of car hire disruption after it emerged that the DVLA is to scrap the paper counterpart of driving licences from 8 June, with drivers told to obtain a special online code before heading abroad – or possibly be refused a rental car.

In what it says is a purge on red tape, the DVLA is abolishing the paper counterpart that currently accompanies all UK photocard licences. It is advising drivers to destroy the document (not their paper licence if they still have one) because it will no longer be legally valid. Instead, all endorsements will be held electronically on a web-based service called “Share Driving Licence”.

But fears are growing that the “very muddled” introduction of the new rules will almost certainly lead to some hirers being turned away by car firms this summer. This is because many car hire companies insist…

Portugal Car Hire Busy Summer Expected

16 Apr

Following the trend observed in recent months, it is expected a significant increase in tourists in the Algarve this year.

Portugal Car Hire at Faro airportTravellers to Portugal this Summer will have to be very organised in booking their holiday essentials following the news that the country is expecting a bumper year for tourism.
Some plans for a stress free holiday to the Algarve this year include reserving car hire in advance to ensure availability of car hire in Faro.

Figures recently released showed that UK arrivals to Portugal last year were up by 8.6% with an even more dramatic increase expected for this summer.

Already accommodation prices have been lifted because of the demand and they’re expected to rise further as the busy summer season approaches.
The same applies for Portugal Car Hire and Faro airport Car Hire: It is expected by all rent a car companies an increase of demand as Summer aproaches and seriously foreseen a shortage of rental cars all over the Algarve.

Demand for holiday essentials such as hire cars this summer is likely to increase because of the many new flights to and from the country’s four major international airports announced by international carriers.

Amongst scheduled operators, British Airways and TAP have new flights whilst budget operators, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Flybe have expanded their schedule and Monarch and Thomson have added extra charter seats.

Portugal is traditionally one of the biggest markets for Summer and this year will see it grow further. Prices for car hire booked in advance is still very cheap but as the busy season approaches and demand increases bookings made closer to the season will mean higher prices.
Last year many tourists to Algarve that have made their car hire reservations too late faced the increase of car hire prices and even many of them didn’t even had the luck of having a car for their driving journeys in the Algarve.

So, if you’re considering a holiday to the Algarve or elsewhere in Portugal this summer, it’s time to get your plans underway today, don’t delay your car hire bookings to gurantee availability and ensure a stress free holiday in the Algarve.

British Airways returns to Faro

7 Apr

UK flag-carrier British Airways has re-launched a direct flight between London Heathrow and the Algarve more than ten years after it first suspended the service to Faro.

British Airways at Faro airportBritish Airways suspended its flights to Faro back in October 2007 after more than 40 years of flying to the region, following the termination of its GB Airways franchise which was bought by easyJet in a multi-billion euro deal.

After more than a decade’s absence, a British Airways Airbus A320 from Heathrow landed at Faro Airport on Saturday (30 March), with a welcome party being organised to celebrate the return of the important route.
Passengers on the flight were welcomed to the Algarve with regional almond cakes and personalised gifts, and the aircraft also received the obligatory flight baptism.

It was further revealed that this summer, British Airways will re-introduce its twice-daily flights to London-Gatwick after two years of single daily flights, as well as re-opening its London City-Faro route for July and August.
Altogether, along with the new Heathrow-Faro route, the airport said the new developments are “highly representative of the attractiveness of the Algarve market and region to the British market and the flag carrier.”

The boosted connection between Faro and London will also facilitate connecting flights for those flying from the Algarve to long-haul destinations on the British flag-carrier.

The Heathrow route will take the form of two return flights per week, on Saturdays and Sundays, with the departure time from the UK being at 4.15pm and the return flight from Faro scheduled for 7.45pm.
The flights have a duration of two hours and 30 minutes.

Algarve Cup 2014

7 Mar

The 2014 Algarve Cup is the 21st edition of the Algarve Cup, an invitational women’s football tournament held annually in Portugal. It takes place between 5–12 March 2014

Algarve Cup 2014The top women’s national teams in the world have an eye toward the 2015 World Cup, but they must first compete for a title in the prestigious 2014 Algarve Cup.

This year’s event will once again take place in Portugal and will feature 12 squads battling in a round-robin tournament. However, only the top eight-ranked teams (included in Groups A and B) have a chance to come away as winners.

The United States has been the dominant force at this tournament over the years, winning eight of the last 11 titles, including in 2013 with a finals win over Germany. The Germans now return to avenge this loss and bring back the trophy after winning in 2012.

Additionally, 2011 World Cup winners Japan should remain a top contender for the cup, as well as Sweden, Norway and other talented teams.

Team USA head coach Tom Sermanni explained how tough the competition will be, via

The group we’re in at the Algarve Cup will probably be the most significant test since I’ve come aboard and a different kind of challenge as we will be playing teams that have the belief and aim to come out to attack us and beat us. The dynamics of these games will be different than some of the more recent matches, and that’s something that we want, that we need and that the players are looking forward to.

This will obviously create a competitive atmosphere. The only question is which squad will be able to handle the pressure and come away with a title.

Michal Kwiatkowski wins Volta ao Algarve 2014

6 Mar

The Polish cyclist Michal Kwiatkowski was crowned the overall winner of Volta ao Algarve 2014, registering the lowest cumulative time in the competition’s five stages.

Volta Algarve 2014In the final stage, the star British rider beat Frenchmen Arnaud Demare ( and Bryan Coquard (Europcar) into second and third as he won the 155.9 kilometre stage between Tavira and Vilamoura in 3 hours, 24 minutes and 10 seconds.

The Omega Pharma-Quick-Step cyclist finished 19 seconds ahead of Spanish rival Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) and 32 seconds ahead of Portuguese World Champion Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida).

“It’s my first stage race victory, so I’m really happy,” Kwiatkowski said.

“I have been aiming for the general classification in the stage races, so to start my 2014 season like this is a good sign. It’s going to be a good spring coming not just for me, but the whole team. I’m really happy about it.”

British cyclist Mark Cavendish, also part of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, placed first in the final stage of the competition and helped Kwiatkowski achieve the overall win.

“I’m very happy,” he said afterwards. “We came here to win the yellow jersey, and to win the stage would be a bonus. We controlled the race and everybody rode incredibly well. It was a super strong lead out, everybody did their part.”

Portuguese cyclist Rui Costa also had a few words on finishing third.

“I could have given the Portuguese something to celebrate, but I didn’t.” Still, Costa admitted he was “very happy” with his and his team’s performance.

All in all, it was another successful edition in the Algarve’s prestigious cycling competition.
